Prizes Galore for MSC Tri in Blacksod
The Vodafone National Series wrapped up in Blacksod today, with William McCormack and Marie Boland taking line honours.
The Mayo sunshine was out and shining for the nearly 300 strong field, but the wind was still gusting with great force. Competitors reported that the bike out to the turn around was swift with a handy tail wind, and "absolutely brutal" and " a real test of mental toughness" coming back. The run course is also famed as one of the toughest of the National Series, taking in a variety of terrain including several sandy sections. So it was even more impressive that MSC Tri clocked up two wins and two second places.
Eoin McManus came home in a time of 02:26:00 to win his Category and finish 20th overall in his first olympic distance triathlon. Amy Spratt showed her class in Blacksod in what was also her first Olympic Distance with a great category win in a time of 03:01:12. She was followed closely by Jane MCDevitt who came home 2nd in her category in 03:04:05.
The dream team of James McIntyre, Ted Mc Caffrey and Glenn McGee aka Atlantic Wheelers topped off a superb weekend of racing for MSC Tri with 2nd place in the relay in Blacksod.
Well done to everyone from the club who made the journey to what was a very tough but very well run event. Well done to Kilmore Triathlon Club and all involved.

Winter Training programme
The winter training program will commence on Monday, the 3rd of October. Membership is open from Thursday the 22nd of September. We have reviewed the survey results(thank you to the 34 people who completed it). The results had 4 main trends, namely;
- There is a demand for a Pilates Class
- Wednesday night was the most popular for Circuits
- Monday night was most popular for the pool.
- More swim analysis and coaching
We are in discussions with a Pilate’s instructor. If this works out we will do 8 weeks of circuits and 4 weeks of Pilates. We will be able to confirm this until 2nd week of October. If it does happen we will do 12 weeks of circuits and there will be a €5 refund to each member.
Everybody cannot have Wednesday night!!! Slots are limited each night and will be allocated on a first come basis, therefore you need to contact the leisure centre as early as possible on Thursday.
There are two pool sessions scheduled for this year, Monday 645 am and Monday 8pm. We are getting the full pool on Monday morning ie 5 lanes and 4 lanes on Monday night.
At 4 persons per lane this works out at 20 people on Monday morning and 16 on Monday night. This is the ideal scenario but if more people request the Monday night then it may have to be 5 adults per lane on Monday night. If we get a lot of demand for the membership we may have to put on a 3rd session.
James McIntyre has detailed out the work that he will do during the membership. As you can see he is doing video analysis this year for the swimming. This should enable people to improve their swim stroke and times!!!
Please download the Ballyshannon Winter Training Poster and also some information on training programme and its classes below.

Donegal Bay Swim for Parkinsons a Great Success
On Tuesday 23rd August Sarah Meehan, Barry Duffy and James Mc Intyre completed a 15km swim from St. John's Point to Creevy Pier Ballyshannon Co. Donegal in aid of Parkinsons Disease. The swim was the brainchild of James McIntyre who had dreamt up the idea of swimming the Donegal Bay. "A long time ago I wanted to swim accross Donegal Bay, I imagined the dream team I would need, They all said yes, and were 100% committed from the start, up at 5am for training hugh ammount of time and effort involved. yesterday we compleated it. tough start into swell and chop, tough finish into the tide! 7hrs 10min, 15kilometers. I am so proud and thankfull for everyone for all the help and support!".
This mammoth feat was made even more impressive as the three swimmers had to battle through jelly fish and strong currents. Below is an account from Barry Duffy of the day.
7am St Johns, excited, especially Sarah (she had her ear plugs in!) James went to meet his sponsor and Barry introduced himself to the two girls on the pier. Swim started off fast, as per usual, we got into a rythm. we didnt need the first break! just check goggles and have a laugh you could touch the btm if your legs were 127ft long. Southerly wind picked up bout the 2hr mark, this means swimming into chop, you see the boat then you dont you see the boat then you dont. 3hrs in we hit jellyfish alley, this is a bit like Coyles corner but longer, ended up doing breaststroke, sting relief from boat crew i chose the fresh water option! Still choppy i had a wee word with the man upstairs, Sarah said a decade and James was on a mission then the wind died! Beautiful conditions for swimming, i had the privelage of being in the centre of the formation and could see both swimmers, i know why they are gold medal winners and on the Donegal team, txt book swimming, we made good speed.5hrs in, feeling good spirits were up, encouraged by boat crew, they made us jump for food and catch treats in our mouths (they taught this was funny)Mother nature had called several times but this time she was knocking on the back door, keep swimming pretend theres no one home. When the second boat caught up we had 3 miles left, thats 5k in new money, doable, especially with the pier in sight 6hrs+ in getting tired, legs wanted to walk, lips felt like having ate 3 pkts peanuts, from blowing saltwater bubbles all morning! Could do with a drink! We had missed our ETA and the tide had turned! 6hrs 40 the boat pulled up said we were caught in the current and had to pick it up to make the pier! this means increase stroke rate, pull harder and kick like *#~ (billio)! Three of us together means the fastest sets the pace, all three took their turn, made it! Looked up and words fail me to describe how i felt when we realised the crowd on the pier were cheering us.
The event wouldnt have been possible without the help of the support crew, Tony Cummins, Dineka Maguire & Ann McLoughlin, John O'Neill & Dara O'Malley Daly.
If you would like to donate to Parkinson Disease you can do so by going here.

Time Trial League Change of Distance
This week there is a slight change of plan from the original schedule. Next Wednesday 12th July we are back on the flat (well the hills are alot smaller!) with a 16km time trial meeting at the Lakeside Ballyshannon for 6pm.
Time trial Results and overall league standing can be found here.
Club Time Trial No.8 Wednesday 7th July 2011
After a few weeks break the MSC Tri Time Trials resumed last night with a grueling 2.7km hill climb. 21 hardy souls battled this demanding course which twisted and wound is way up high above Lough Melvin. Weather conditions were almost perfect with some light showers towards the end of the evening. Some fantastic times posted by all involved. Next Wednesday is the second of the hill climbs, same course, same distance, same hills! Meet at the Football field in Kinlough for 6:15pm. Results here.
Time Trial League Resumes
This evening Wednesday 6th July sees the return of the very popular Summer Time Trial League. The group will meet in Kinlough at the football field, this is located just outside the village on the Manorhamilton side beside the Community Centre. We will meet here at 6:15pm for sign on and then cycle in a group to the start of the 2.7km hill time trial about 10km away. It is very important that people take care cycling out to the start as the roads are very narrow. Below is a map of the course with the climb gradient percentage. Its going to be a nice evening and road surfaces are excellent so theres no excuse. See you 6:15pm!

Mullaghmore Triathlon 2011

Another fantastic day was had by all at the annual Mullaghmore Triathlon. The weather almost held up with some light showers towards the end of the day but that didnt seem to affect the performances. First male home was Ruaidhri Geraghty and first female home was Anna Crooks. The results can be download here in pdf format.
Thanks to legginit.com for the photos.
There are more event photos here thanks to Maria Molland.
Below is the race report from Triathlon Ireland.
The Mullaghmore triathlon winner was Ruadhri Geraghty from Galway Triathlon Club in a time of 1:04:47. Geraghty didn’t feature in the first ten swimmers but he made up the gap on the 20k cycle and put in a very strong run time of 17mins 28 seconds for the challenging 5k course around Mullaghmore head. Second place went to Karl Kildea from Setanta and third place finisher was Sligo’s Neil Walton.
The female winner was Anna Crooks from Predator Triathlon Club. Having won the Irish Duathlon Championship earlier this year she dominated the race from the start and had a comfortable margin over Wicklow triathlete Deborah Megan. Aoibheann Bartley from Cavan finished in third place.
As ever the Mullaghmore Triathlon attracted a capacity field and organisers capped the number of participants at 500. Many of the country’s top athletes participated as did many less serious triathletes. All were delighted to see the flat calm sea conditions on Saturday morning as the event kicked off and conditions were perfect throughout with very little wind and the only rain shower bringing some relief to the hard working competitors towards the end of the run.
There were eleven relay teams entered and first place went to the curiously named ‘Da Situation’ which was anchored by Sligo’s international athlete Eimear O’Brien. Dara Mooney from Inisfree Wheelers put in a tremendous cycle and the swim leg was completed by Leona Moran from Sligo Tri Club.
Bike Time Trials
The Time Trials will resume on Wednesday 6th July and will run for 9 weeks. Please see attached schedule. We will have a few changes this time with a couple of short hill climbs and there will be three team events. These will be made up of teams of three, with the teams being picked on each of the nights. The teams will be fairly matched!!! Each team of three must start and finish together.
We were very dependent (and grateful) to the volunteers that marshalled and did the time keeping in the last set of time trials. We can not continue to do so!!!! We need people to volunteer at least once during the series. If we don’t have marshals we cannot run the time trials!! If people can look at the schedule and advise me of a date that suits them I will do up a “roster”. If family or friends want to help that would also be useful. They are only needed for about 30 mins on any given night.
I would also remind people about the insurance and the need to have Triathlon Ireland membership to take part in our club events. If you have not taken out membership please do so. Please bring along your membership details at the next event so that we can take down the details.
We also need to collect €5 from MSCTRI members or €15 from non members for participation in this event. This is to cover costs etc. If there is any surplus we may have a few prizes at the end.
Apart from the first two events, we will meet at the Lakeside centre at 6pm.
Time Trial Schedule

20th July 20k
27th July 4K

Cycling Training Membership
We have recently being advised by Triathlon Ireland that if unregistered cyclists attend our training sessions, that in the event of an accident involving one of these cyclists, then the club members could be held personally liable. There have been recent cases where individuals have been held liable. It is unfortunate that we have to discuss this but it is the era we live in. It is important therefore that anybody who participates in our training session is registered with Triathlon Ireland. There are four types of memberships available with Triathlon Ireland;
Full This membership is for people who train with a club and intend to race several times during the triathlon season. You are insured for club training, and to participate in all Triathlon Ireland events, without paying a one-day-license. The cost of Full Membership is 50 Euro + 3 euro for processing & transaction fees.
Associate This membership is for people who are involved with a club and may take part in some training sessions, but do not intend to race (or only participate in a couple of races). Although you are insured to train with a club, you will have to pay a one-day license fee each time you race. The cost of Associate Membership is 15 Euro + 3 euro for processing & transaction fees.
Student You have the same benefits as a full member, but you pay a reduced fee. This is only available to full time students. Proof of student status will be required. The cost of Student Membership is 15 Euro + 3 euro for processing & transaction fees.
Junior This membership is only available to people who are 19 years old or younger on the 31 December of the year of application. Proof of age will be required (birth cert, passport). You are insured to train with a club (as long as the appropriate guidelines are followed). You are insured to participate in Triathlon Ireland children's events. The cost of Junior Membership is 1 Euro.
Alot of us already have full membership because we are competing but the Associate membership will allow anybody to train with us through the year for a relatively modest amount.
This is not an option. We are going to have to ensure that everybody who attends our sessions has a Triathlon Ireland membership, be it full or associate.
From Monday 23rd May nobody will be allowed to participate in our sessions unless they have their membership in order.
Regards The Committee Mullaghmore Triathlon Club
